A little surprise arrived in the mail the other day. A letter from Emmett's foster Omma. Such a wonderful woman, who shared 4 months with Emmett and still writes a letter every Christmas. I often wonder how many other foster children she has cared for since Emmett left.
I shared the letter with Emmett, and was surprised by his reaction. He began to cry. We always marvel at how well Emmett adjusted when we came home. He had the rare attachment issue, or a weepy day here or there, but ultimately he really jumped right into our life. I sometimes forget that all that he has endured in his short 5 years. I asked him why he was sad. I asked if he missed her? He said yes, and dug his head into my shoulder. I reassured him that it was ok to be sad, ok to miss her. That she was a very special person just like first Omma, and that we would always remember, respect and love her.
Emmett lived with foster Omma for 4 months, and she had a profound effect on his life. I suppose you never know what impact you'll have in the life of a child - even if only for 4 months.
