Yep, that's a nerve...

I'm all for churches getting out there - reaching the unchurched, advertising. Heck, Craig could do some really nice graphics for such a church. But the recent fliers which appeared in our mailbox were a bit over-the-top.

Now, throw out the word 'sex' and eye brows will raise, heads will turn. I don't mind the topical sermon here or there, but 5 weeks on such topics as " Why God doesn't care about your virginity" have taken the shock-factor a little too far. And by-the-way, God DOES care about your virginity - just for the record. Sadly, on further investigation, the new church's website listed the following reasons to attend their services:
Loud Music
Casual Atmosphere
Short Services
Fun for kids

Church is basically a non-alcholic bar with child care? Hmmm...

What should you expect from a service? "We wanted to start a church that was great for men - not just women and children. That's why you'll notice our media emphasis, short services..." quoted from the flier as a statement from the pastor.

I know that the 'un-churched' tend to not be interested in the book of Leviticus (as the pastor makes obvious in an interview with the local newspaper). However, are we, as the body of believers really out here to sell our message to the highest bidder? Did Paul lighten the mood when he flat out scolded the church in Corinth? Paul basically gave the Corinthians an 1st century smack down. Did he have to make the message of the cross relevant? Do you have the certainty of everlasting life? Do you know where hope comes from? Do you feel joy, peace and freedom from your mistakes? GUESS WHAT? The cross is relevant to you! It doesn't take sex to suddenly make people feel the Bible is relevant. And don't get me started on the contextualization of the scriptures. Ugh...

Yes, this hit a nerve. But what can I say - Sex sells, it even sells the Church.
